A Sonnet For Fran

The Tie That Binds

"The Tie That Binds" - Betsy Vaden

You know you have found the love of your life when you try with all your might to end the relationship and fail, not once, but time and time again. Such is my fate and my blessing.

I wrote this poem after such a recapitulation. It clearly shows my mixed feelings.

I chose the sonnet form for this, due to its subtlety and depth, appropriate for such a complex matter. It is in the Martian form, that I developed in my poem "The Sonnet". Hey! I developed it, I might as well use it!

Again I tried to break with you and failed,
Again my anger cooled with passing time,
Once more your love has rung the answ'ring chime,
Once more the love between us has prevailed.
But what can this avail us if we find;
That still we fight until we wish to part.
This problem we must solve right from the start,
Or suffer anguish in the heart and mind.
To have this strike again will be our loss,
When happiness is all we wish to see;
You cannot say it's all for lack of car.
The problem is you have to be the boss,
And that you have so little time for me;
If only you could see the way you are.
