Digital cameras are almost worthless without the software that surrounds them: You can't look at the images without a browser, you can't get the best out of your images without using an editor, you can't readily share them online without some 3rd party gallery and you can't send them to the net or the printers without some way of scaling and compressing them.
Furthermore, your camera contains a package of dedicated, high performance software that performs a host of highly technical operations in real time which you take for granted. Such things include: light metering, auto focus, shutter control, white balance, Bayer interpolation, sharpening, noise reduction, file compression, gamma compression, external communications, GUI management, in-camera post-editing, image browsing and a host of other things. These things generally impact on your final images so it is important understand them also.
