Sure, I am the Übergeek, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy sport as much as Jack Walters the timber cutter or Shane Johnstone the brick layer. In fact, I've done so much transcending, that I passed beyond sport into geekiness at an early age, then beyond geekiness all the way around to sport again in my mid twenties, and then beyond the sport again and back into geekiness in my late thirties and then as I was going around the circle for the 3rd time in my forties it all kind of merged into one sea of culture for me, where I could pick and choose Beethoven or Essendon, Proust or Federer, Golden Earring or Lance Armstrong, Cabernet or Lager depending on my mood.
Although I have no snob attitude towards sports, it hasn't escaped my notice that most sportsmen are ignorant drongos with little keeping their ears apart. You need only listen to an interview with these cultural role models to see this for yourself. These same people go on to occupy many of the administrative and support roles in their sport after they retire, and as a consequence the governing bodies of most sports exhibit no imagination when it comes to looking after the non-financial aspects of their game and only understand the greed for cash.
Such venal and uninspired leadership makes for a dull spectacle on the field. Furthermore, since the journalists that have the power to propagate new ideas on the subject are often past players as well, they are similarly useless in dreaming up new solutions. I have also observed first hand that sporting clubs tend to be full of the small minded, who are jealous and afraid of the mentally gifted and the well educated. This fear creates a culture that acts to crush any intelligence or free thought that might start to appear. For these reasons it is not realistic to expect the custodians of world sport to deal effectively with any of the multitude of problems besetting their sport.
Someone outside the main sporting culture must put their hand up and come forth with an independent analysis and a raft of innovative and effective solutions. That person is me! Take my ideas on board people.
