Green

"Green", the hue, is one of the most famous of all colours. It is one of the additive primaries and is the wavelength that most stimulates the Green sensitive cones in the human eye. Green is associated with nature, the environmental movement, Ireland, Islam, spring, hope and envy. The word comes from "grass" and "grow". This is not surprising as all the fertile world depends on chloropyll in leaves which is, of course, green.

There has always been a lack of good Green pigments and dyes especially in the brighter shades. Dull hues do exist however. Such pigments include: Terre Verte which was obtained from clays containing iron oxide, magnesium, aluminum silicate, or potassium. Verdigris, from oxidised copper and Viridian from chrome oxide. Most brighter greens were obtained by mixing blue and yellow.

It is fascinating that despite all the resources of modern science and technology there is NO bright, light fast, pure green pigment available. Fortunately artists are able to get around this limitation by mixing arylide yellow and pthalo green or blue. Chromium Green is a modern pigment but it is rather dull. Nevertheless it is the basis for a host of commercial paints for houses, cars, kitchenware etc.
